ABSI Launches SUAS Reserve Corps

Posted Leave a commentPosted in Uncategorized

ABSI Defense is pleased to announce the launch of our ABSI SUAS Reserve Corps.

The ABSI Defense SUAS Reserve Corps allows those with SUAS and aviation experience and interest to find rewarding part-time work that benefits first responders, uniformed services, emergency management and others utilizing small UAS to help protect our country and communities.

The ABSI Defense SUAS Reserve Corps is made up of former military pilots, current commercial pilots, former active duty and first responder UAS operators, and civilians with significant UAS backgrounds and interest. These operators are recruited by ABSI Defense to make up a pool of available operators we can call on for ongoing and quick-turn engagements.

If selected to be a part of the Corps, operators will be offered the opportunity to participate in the ABSI training program -- an on-site intensive program that will result in a certification and entry into our Reserve Corps. Corps members will receive notifications about potential opportunities to utilize their training and expertise on an ongoing basis, based on their preferences and stated availability.

High performing team members will be eligible to move into our highly sought after full-time UAS operator/trainer positions, serving some of the most demanding SUAS requirements in the industry.

ABSI Defense Challenges Long-Held Beliefs about Defense Contracting

Posted Leave a commentPosted in Contracts

Disrupting the Way the Military Procures UAS Systems, Training and Services…

ABSI Defense is a local company working in the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) space, helping customers get systems and services on contract quickly. In a marketplace where it can often take 12 – 18 months to get a contract awarded, the idea of rapid procurement is practically a unicorn—rare and magical. But it can happen, and ABSI Defense is working to make it happen for their customers.

“Small UAS technology advances rapidly,” said Chris Sacco, CEO of ABSI Defense. “With short technology lifecycles measured in months in some cases, it doesn’t benefit our warfighters to wait twelve months to get their hands on systems, only to have them be a year behind the technology our enemies employ.” Add training on those systems to the equation, and it’s easy to see why traditional procurement timelines don’t work for UAS.

“We have been very successful at helping our customers get on contract inside of thirty days,” Sacco explained. “That means we can have systems delivered and being trained in two to three months—a timeframe that can literally make the difference between life and death, considering what’s going on in theater.”

In addition to rapid procurement and fielding of systems to meet urgent needs, ABSI Defense provides training for a variety of those systems, focusing not only on technology operation but on mission-based employment of that technology. By offering systems, training and sustainment, the company is making it possible to procure, train and service UAS through one procurement package, saving time and money over traditional ways of contracting separately.

ABSI Defense has established an extensive network of partners, making it possible to meet a variety of UAS-based requirements quickly, and flex to add new offerings. “We really want to change the conversation about government contracting,” Sacco stated. “Our warfighters depend on us to get them what they need as quickly as possible. They deserve to know we’re doing our best. And I think our best can be better than it’s been in the past.”

UK Adopts New Drone Laws

Posted Leave a commentPosted in Uncategorized

The UK’s latest series of drone laws went into effect yesterday, closely following US operating rules while being slightly less restrictive, at least for the time being. (Need to brush up on US rules? Find them here.) The Civil Aviation Authority announced that the new laws prohibit drones from being operated at an altitude greater than 400ft above ground level and closer than 1km to an airport.

The consequences of violating the new laws are an “unlimited fine,” up to a five-year prison sentence, or both. The UK government has confirmed that it is in the process of passing legislation for an addition set of drone-related laws, which include instating a requirement for owners to register all drones over 250 grams with the Civil Aviation Authority and making it mandatory for drone owners to pass an online safety test. These additional measures will go into effect on November 30, 2019.

Earlier this month the UK government announced that they were also considering imposing an age restriction on civilian drone use.

ABSI Joint Venture redUAS to Develop Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Course for First Responders

ABSI Instructors to Develop and Deliver C-UAS First Responder Training with New Mexico Tech

ABSI Defense is being tapped to offer nationwide counter-UAS training for first responders through its joint venture, redUAS. The joint venture was awarded a contract through New Mexico Tech to develop and deliver C-UAS training specifically for first responders, security and emergency management personnel worldwide.

New Mexico Tech offers high-quality training to emergency responders around the globe geared toward preparing emergency first responders to better prevent and respond to terrorist incidents.

In an environment where drones are proliferating, and many hobbyist operators fly without awareness of FAA rules and airspace regulations, first responders and emergency crews face increasing security risks from above. There is also growing concern over the threat of weaponized or other payload-equipped drones being utilized by malicious actors or terrorist organizations, as detailed in the DHS bulletin issued last year. redUAS offers training, services and technology consultation to organizations seeking to mitigate that threat.

“We’re excited to participate in the development of this critically needed training,” Chris Sacco, CEO of ABSI noted. “While we have been dealing with unmanned systems and the threats they can pose for years, I think the public is just waking up to the potential malicious use of these technologies against soft targets in the U.S. The fact that our first responder community is preparing to address those threats now is encouraging and we consider it a privilege to help get them ready to accomplish their mission.

“The team at redUAS has been building counter-UAS capabilities through both operational experience and as the C-UAS firm of choice for high-profile public events like the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.”

Associate Director of Training at NMT, Joel Haley, said, “This training will help round out our preparedness offerings in an area we believe to be increasingly critical to our nation’s first responders. We are pleased to be teaming with redUAS and believe the operational perspective they bring as former military members and first responders will be a good fit for our students.”

ABSI Included in American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standardization Collaborative (UASSC)

Posted Leave a commentPosted in Uncategorized

ABSI Defense is pleased to join other Unmanned Systems industry leaders to assist in the development of a standardization roadmap to identify existing standards, developing standards, and gaps relating to the safe mass integration of drones into the existing National Airspace System (NAS).

ANSI’s notification about the formation of the collaborative states, “UASSC’s roadmap will include a proposed timeline for completion of the work and list organizations that can perform the work. The aim is to describe the current standards landscape, articulate standardization needs, drive coordinated standards activity, minimize duplication of effort, and inform resource allocation for standards participation.”

ABSI joins other UAS industry leaders and commercial organizations invested in the development of standards governing UAS regulation including Apple, AT&T, Bell Helicopter, NASA Ames Research Center, Northrop Grumman, Rockwell Collins, and others.

“It is an honor and a responsibility to be part of this collaborative,” ABSI CEO Chris Sacco stated. “There is a lot of work to be done and a lot of competing goals, regulations and objectives, but the bottom line will be to establish a system in which there is room for UAS technology to continue to develop and to expand safely across the national airspace.”

The group is currently developing the standardization roadmap, with working groups meeting twice monthly to consider use cases and the level of airspace, risk, and regulatory environments involved with each.

ABSI Informs, Entertains, and Educates at Pax River Naval Air Museum STEAM Day Event

Posted Leave a commentPosted in STEM

ABSI proudly sponsored the annual Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) Day at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum (PRNAM) on February 10. The event, which brought in more than 450 attendees, saw local companies working together to share a love of aviation with the local community.

ABSI hosted a mini drone obstacle course inside a sixteen-foot enclosure, allowing kids and adults to try their hand at navigating a mini drone through hoops and onto a landing pad. “Part of the inspiration for the idea was the county’s first drone races, which we’re sponsoring in June,” Chris Sacco, CEO of ABSI said. “But a bigger part was sharing our knowledge and interest in unmanned aviation system with the engineers and designers who’ll be building them in the future. ABSI has a two-fold mission of supporting our local community and dispelling negative associations with drones by promoting safe practices and responsible operation.”

In addition to the drone obstacle course, ABSI team members discussed licensing requirements and highlighted the difference between hobby and commercial drone operation. They also demonstrated a first-person-view goggle attached to a Typhoon system.

“ABSI had a line next to their booth all day long,” said Dan Bramos, Vice President, Activities and Director of Communication for the museum. “Together with our other sponsors, ABSI provided a great hands-on view of the intersections of art and science in aviation and demonstrated how that technology is being used in the world today.”
